Single Spine Holly Offers Evergreen Privacy

Why Needlepoint Holly?

Hollies might be known as autumn or winter shrubs, but with small white flowers, the Needlepoint Holly offers delicate beauty in spring before its quintessential red berries sprout, adding color for fall and winter! These berries aren’t just ornamental, either - they'll attract birds and wildlife to your landscape.

What’s more, the Needlepoint Holly’s leaves don’t have the multiple prongs you'd normally see in Hollies. Instead, each leaf has a single point, hence the shrub’s name.

Gardeners add this versatile shrub to their landscapes for many different reasons. Some plant it as a privacy screen, as the shrub’s thick leaves and mature height and width of 10 to 15 feet offer excellent protection. Others use it a specimen plant to add evergreen color to their landscaping.

Wherever you plant it, you'll love the evergreen beauty and low-maintenance impact this Needlepoint Holly adds to your landscape.

Why FastGrowingTrees.com is Better

The Needlepoint Holly is notably low-maintenance - it can grow in any type of soil and thrives in partial to full sun. This easy-care Holly is also resistant to just about every gardening problem - salt, heat, drought, disease, and even hungry deer!

Nurtured and grown with the utmost care, your Needlepoint Holly will arrive to you ready to thrive. Order yours now!

Pollination Info

Needlepoint Holly Pollination

We carry male and female hollies at our nursery, and you will need both to produce berries on the female plant. However, hollies are hard to tell apart when they are not fruiting, and we can’t guarantee whether you will receive a male or female. For best results, we suggest planting in groups to enjoy berries on the female plants and lush greenery on both year-round.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant your Holly in an area that receives full to partial sunlight (4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day). For a hedge or privacy screen, plant your Hollies about 7-8 feet apart for a tight, dense hedge. And make sure it doesn't sit in a low area of the yard that collects standing water.

When you're ready to plant, dig a hole that's about 2 to 3 times the width of the root ball (and just as deep), place your Holly and backfill the soil. Add organic material to your soil to lighten the texture and improve drainage. Finally, mulch the surrounding soil to preserve moisture and water once planting is complete.

2. Watering: Keep your soil moist until your tree is established. Once your Holly is established, it's drought tolerant and only needs extra water during dry spells. Until then, we recommend watering about once weekly or checking the surrounding soil for dryness (use your finger to check the soil about 2 inches down).

3. Fertilizing: Each year, in early spring, fertilize your Holly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for an acid-loving shrub (something like Holly-Tone).

4. Pruning: Needlepoint Hollies can be pruned heavily or not at all. Heavy pruning is best saved for winter, while light trimming can be done anytime.
